Volunteer Spotlight, Ruben and Jann Gam

Ruben and Jann grew up on opposite coasts: Jann in Northern California and Ruben in South Florida. In 2011, after Ruben’s retirement as a fire captain in South Dakota, they returned to Florida to be near the ocean.

After moving to the Flagler Beach area, Ruben was looking for a part-time job to keep busy and wanted to work outdoors. He found such an opportunity as an OPS park ranger at Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area. Ruben served with excellence as a ranger and member of the Gamble Rogers Sea Turtle Patrol and continues that tradition now as a park volunteer along with his wife.

Jann grew up traveling all over the West with her family, exploring the natural world under the guidance of her father, a marine biologist. Her love for the outdoors, camping, wildlife, ocean and beach is a perfect match for the work she and Ruben do for the park.

Ruben and Jann appreciate the natural beauty of Gamble Rogers and North Peninsula state parks so much that every Saturday at sunrise they patrol park roadsides picking up litter. In addition to helping to keep the park looking pristine, Ruben and Jann assist with other maintenance projects as needed.

Ruben and Jann take pride in being members of the park family and helping preserve the park’s natural resources.
